When I come to, Sutton is asleep. Itâs still pretty late, so I get out of her hold without waking her up. I lay her down on the couch that pretty much is a bed to her. I grab the throw and cover her. I clean up our mess and shut the tv off. After making sure everything is out of the way, I make my way up the stairs to my sleeping area. I slide into the back seat, rearrange the seat in the front and sleep right in the middle, on the floor of the car. I donât bother covering myself with a throw; I never cover-up. I lay my head against the back of the driverâs seat, and I hear Cookie as she settles on the hood of the car like my protector. I fall asleep like that.
I know the instant Iâm dreaming because Iâm transported back to the house that I lived in with my mother. 6 houses down from Tia.
Today, mom is off, and Iâm excited because she tucks me into bed. We had pancakes and the whole breakfast bit for dinner. Itâs the best thing ever. I usually soak my pancakes in syrup, but tonight, I wanted to be on my best behavior so that mom could get to stay home. Itâs working so far. âMami,â I call her name out as she stares out of my window.
She turns to look at me with a smile on her face, but even at 12, I can tell something is wrong. I know many things are wrong at this age, what tia is doing to me or making me do, but If I say anything, mom will lose everything. She says I have no dad who wants me, and itâs hard not to believe since I donât know who he is, and my mother has lost a lot of weight. She looks really bony. I can see her ribs sometimes when sheâs wearing a tank-top. I donât say anything even though Iâve caught her passing out on the floor more than once when I oversleep in the car while she works the night shift. At first, I didnât know how to escape tia and what she wanted from me, but I found an old abandoned car near old man Rayâs house. I would hide in there until morning came so I could go home.
âYes, Jes?â she answers. I open my mouth to ask her whatâs wrong but then I shut it. Before I could even open it again, my mother cries. She wipes her tears with the back of her now bony hand. She clears her throat as she smoothes my hair back out of my face. âMy baby boy, Jesse. I love you, with everything in me, I love you. I want to tell you something that Iâve never said before. Something I need you to remember.â
I nod. âIâm listening... â
âI know Iâve never mentioned who your father is but know that he,â she clears her throat.
